Over the years Japan has designed some of the most interesting looking trains. Many of these trains are still running today. One models that I'm doing research into is the one called the "JNR EC181" model. They looked like they were influenced by American automotive designs from the 1950s. To me they look like bizarre interpretations of Cadillacs or other General Motors vehicles from the late 1940s and 1950s. Here are some images of these very bizarre looking trains. As I find out more about them I will post more information.

This one is named the Hakusan. As far as I know I don't believe these models are still running today. They have a very rounded and pleasing shape. Notice the Chevrolet-like emblem on the front of the train. It reminds me of something you'd see on the front of the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. Anyway it is a very interesting looking train with a very characteristic paint job. I think only the Japanese could create such an bizarre fusion of American and Japanese style. (I see some reference to this being the 489 model, and I think it went out of service in 1974)

This model is still in service. Notice how it retains the same design cues as the original. Japanese love tradition.

Here is some more detailed information I found on these trains. The 183 and 189 express series started running in 1972, and they were design for heavy snowfall conditions leaving from Tokyo to the North. Also, these trains can apparently run on both AC and DC current. This was a unique feature for the time.

The 583 series was the world first electric train that had a sleeping car.

The 781 series was specifically designed to run in the heavy snows around Hokkaido.

If this is not enough information for you about these rains visit this website to find even more information. http://www.rokko1go.jpn.org

The 183 model went into service in 1972. That is amazing because to me, the styling looks much older than that.
